"description_short": "Sofa-style shape with raised bolsters on four sides, a high-density egg-crate foam base, a zip-off machine-washable cover and a waterproof inner lining, in three sizes up to 122 x 89 cm.",
"description": "The problem with most beds sold for big dogs\n\nWalk into a pet shop and look at what is marketed as a large bed. A lot of it is a round cushion, or a rectangle that is large compared with a chihuahua bed and small compared with an actual Rottweiler. The dog ends up with its head on the floor, its back legs over the edge, or both. Then the fibre inside packs flat after a few weeks, and the dog is effectively sleeping on tiles with a tea towel in between.\n\nBig dogs change the maths. A 35 kg dog puts real pressure through a shoulder and a hip when it flops down sideways. Anything that depends on loose stuffing will compress at those pressure points first, and that is exactly where the dog needs the support. A big dog also sheds more, carries in more dirt, and takes up more of the room, so the bed has to survive washing and still look acceptable in a living space.\n\nThis bed is built around those realities. It is a rectangle, not a donut. The base is a slab of high-density egg-crate foam rather than fibre. The cover unzips and goes in the machine. And it comes in three sizes that go up to 122 x 89 cm, which is a genuinely big footprint.\n\nHow the sofa shape works\n\nThe design is a C-shape chaise. There is a padded bolster around four sides, roughly 9 cm high, with the front dropped down into a step-in opening. The dog walks straight in over the low front edge and then has raised edges to lean on wherever it settles.\n\nThat shape suits how most dogs actually sleep. Some dogs want a headrest, so they drape their chin over the bolster. Some want contact on their back, so they press into a side. Some sprawl flat and use nothing but the middle. The sofa shape covers all three without forcing a curl.\n\nThe low front matters more than people expect. A bed with full-height bolsters on all four sides is a step up and over for a stiff or heavy dog, and some dogs just will not bother. A dropped front removes that hurdle. It also means the bed reads more like furniture and less like an obstacle in the corner of the room.\n\nWhat is inside\n\nTwo different fills do two different jobs here.\n\nThe sleeping base is high-density egg-crate foam. The egg-crate profile is that familiar peaks-and-valleys surface. The point is weight distribution: instead of the dog's hip pressing one small spot flat, the load spreads across a wider area of the slab. For a heavy dog, that is the difference between lying on a cushion and lying on the floor through a cushion.\n\nThe bolsters are filled with soft fibre, which is the right call for an edge you want to be squashy. A foam bolster would be firm and unwelcoming as a pillow. A fibre bolster squashes into whatever shape the dog's neck wants, and springs back when the dog gets up.\n\nBetween the cover and the foam sits a waterproof inner lining. This is the quiet hero of the whole product. It means a spilled water bowl, muddy paws or an accident stops at the lining rather than soaking into the foam, and wet foam is very hard to recover. Worth repeating clearly: the lining is the waterproof part. The outer cover is normal fabric and will get wet.\n\nFabrics, floors and the room it lives in\n\nThe sleep surface is a soft plush with a fish-scale pattern. It is pleasant for a dog to lie on and the pattern fabric does not shed easily, so you are not picking bed fluff off a black coat. The outer panels and the outside of the bolsters are a harder-wearing grey fabric, because that is the part that rubs against walls, table legs and the side of the couch.\n\nGrey is a sensible colour for a dog bed in a shared room. It hides the everyday grey-brown of real life better than cream, and it does not fight with the furniture.\n\nThe underside has a non-skid base. On timber, tiles, vinyl or polished concrete, a bed without grip will travel across the room every time the dog gets up. The non-skid bottom keeps it roughly where you put it. No bed is completely immovable when a big dog pushes off it hard, but this stops the daily creep.\n\nIt is an indoor bed. Leaving it out on a deck in sun and rain will wreck the fabric and the fill much faster than anything that happens indoors.\n\nPicking the size\n\nThis is the part worth slowing down for, because it is where most dog bed purchases go wrong.\n\nThe maker lists three sizes. Large is 89 x 64 x 17 cm and is suggested for dogs up to 22 kg, weighing 2.2 kg itself. XL is 107 x 81 x 18 cm for dogs up to 36 kg, weighing 3.2 kg. XXL is 122 x 89 x 19 cm for dogs up to 54 kg, weighing 3.95 kg.\n\nUse the weight figures as a rough sort, then check length properly. Get your dog lying on its side, fully stretched, and measure from the nose to the base of the tail. Now compare that against the bed length. Remember the quoted length is the outside footprint, bolsters included, so the flat sleeping area in the middle is shorter than the number on the box.\n\nA simple rule: pick the size that is comfortably longer than your stretched-out dog, and if you land between two sizes, take the bigger one. Dogs rarely complain about too much bed. They absolutely notice too little.\n\nA couple of other checks. If the bed is going inside a crate, measure the crate's internal floor, because bolsters need flat space and will fold up if crammed in. If the bed is going in a specific spot in a hallway or beside a bed, measure that spot too; XXL at 122 x 89 cm takes up real room.\n\nLiving with it, day to day\n\nThe cover unzips completely and goes in the washing machine. Use a gentle cycle, and the one rule that really matters is to let it dry all the way through before you put it back on. A cover that goes back damp is how a bed starts to smell.\n\nIn between washes, a vacuum over the plush lifts most of the hair in a minute. If something soaks through the cover, take the cover off and wipe the waterproof lining with a damp cloth, then let it dry before re-covering the foam. The foam itself never goes in a machine or a dryer.\n\nWhen the bed first arrives, it will look flatter than the photos. That is compression from shipping. Unpack it, give it a few hours, and work the bolsters with your hands to redistribute the fibre. It fills out.\n\nOne honest limit: this is a soft fabric and foam bed. It is not designed for a dog that systematically destroys bedding. If your dog is a committed chewer, supervise it at first, and consider a tougher style if things go badly.\n\nThe short version\n\nIf you have a big dog, you need three things from a bed. It has to be long enough for the dog lying flat, it has to hold support under weight instead of flattening, and it has to be cleanable without a fight. This one answers all three: a sofa shape with bolsters and a low step-in front, an egg-crate foam base that spreads load, a zip-off machine-washable cover over a waterproof inner lining, and a non-skid bottom for hard floors.\n\nThree sizes run from 89 x 64 cm up to 122 x 89 cm, with maker-suggested dog weights of 22 kg, 36 kg and 54 kg. Measure your dog stretched out, choose the bed that is longer, and size up if you are torn. That single step is the difference between a bed your dog uses every night and one that sits in the corner while the dog sleeps on your couch.",
